A Reliable Frost-Free Tap (Simple and Almost Free)

Water is the most fundamental resource. It is the vital element, the building block of all life. That’s why the question of water distribution and reticulation deserves our full attention.

If you’ve ever looked for a frost-proof tap system for your greenhouse, garden, or animals, you already know that most commercial solutions are quite expensive and not always reliable. Standard “frost-free” models often cost over €30 (usually around €60, and here €66), and tend to clog or leak over time.

Yet, there’s an ultra-simple, almost free solution that guarantees a working tap in the middle of winter.

The system described here is ideal for unheated outdoor water points such as a greenhouse, a garden shed, an animal watering point, or any outdoor installation where freezing temperatures might block a tap.

The Principle: Nothing Left to Freeze After Use

Why do pipes burst in winter? Because water stays inside after closing the tap. When it freezes, it expands and creates pressure that cracks the pipes or the tap. The solution? No water left inside – that simple.

Frost-Free Tap: How Does It Work?

  • Make sure the inspection chamber is permeable (no bottom; gravel or sand around it can help with drainage, but that’s optional).
  • Weld a metal rod to the tap handle inside the inspection chamber. This lets you open or close the water flow from the surface, without crouching.
  • Drill a small hole (1 mm) into the vertical pipe just after the tap (or use a T-joint with a small auxiliary valve left slightly open).

Result:

When you close the tap, the water drains down and leaves the pipe empty. There’s nothing left to freeze and block the system. Yes, there’s a small water loss when using the tap, but it’s negligible—especially in winter. And in summer, you can simply cover the hole with a bit of duct tape.

One of the core principles of permaculture is to design simple, locally repairable systems. Here, there’s no fancy valve, no special parts.

This system has the advantage of being easy to understand, uses only basic materials, and this frost-proof tap can even be maintained by your mom—with a little duct tape when transitioning between winter and summer.
